Banana and Strawberry Mummies

Healthy and fun, fruit and chocolate Halloween treats

Here is a great idea for a last-minute, extremely easy and wholesome Halloween treat.
I used bananas and strawberries to make these mummies, but you can really make it fun and try with any fruit you like.
I used dark and white chocolate to decorate. And my famous (at least in my house!) homemade googly eyes that I just showed you how to make last week.
And now I promise, I will stop with any eye-wearing food from now on ... well, at least until next year Halloween!
I know I got carried away with the eyes, but look... How can you resist to something so cute?!

What I love most about these mummies (...  other than the googly eyes of course) is that they are the perfect example of healthy but fun snacks.
Halloween doesn't have to be all about candies, sugar and food coloring. It can be about fresh fruit and a little bit of chocolate to make it fun and delicious.
And that's all this recipe asks for. Strawberries and bananas, white and dark chocolate, and googly eyes (which are made just with powdered sugar and mini chocolate chips). Your kids are simply going to love these!

One thing before you rush to the kitchen to try these out. When melting the chocolate, make sure not to over-heat it, or it might start to separate and harden. So when warming it up, mix well and wait to see if all the pieces of chocolate are melted before adding seconds to the microwave. Or you might end up ruining some perfectly good chocolate.
Ready to try it out?! Here is my video recipe too.

INGREDIENTS:

YIELD: 6 banana and 6 strawberry mummies
    • 1 banana
    • 6 large strawberries
    • 4 oz (115 gr) of semi-sweet chocolate
    • 12 pairs of googly eyes (store bought or homemade - recipe here)
    • 4 oz (115 gr) of white chocolate
    • 1 tablespoon of milk (if needed)

PREPARATION:

TIME: 15 minutes to prepare, 30 minutes or more to set
Line a plate or baking sheet with parchment paper.
Wash the strawberries and dry them thoroughly. Peel the banana and cut in three parts. Slice each piece in two lengthwise.

Melt the semi-sweet chocolate in a double boiler, or in the microwave (set on high for 45 seconds).
Mix well. If not completely melted, add 10 extra seconds. Do not microwave for too long, or the chocolate will seize - separate and then hardens. Mix until perfectly smooth.

Dip each piece of banana in the chocolate. Helping yourself with a spoon, coat evenly and set on the parchment paper. Add the googly eyes. Place in the fridge for at least five minutes to set.

If you'd like you can also dip the strawberries in the chocolate, but I decided to just use the white chocolate later.
Microwave the white chocolate chips for about 45 seconds. Mix. If the chocolate doesn't melt, add the teaspoon of milk, and microwave for 10 more seconds if needed.
Mix well until smooth and completely melted. Spoon the melted chocolate in a small plastic bag. Cut a small tip of one of the corners.

Attach the eyes to the strawberries with a little bit of melted white chocolate.

And drizzle strawberries and bananas left to right, leaving the eyes out.
Place in the refrigerator to set and until ready to serve.
